How to Look Stylish in Winter Layers

I love dressing up in fall and winter! It’s the perfect time of the year to play with layers. Aside from the practical need to keep you warm, layers have several advantages in creating an aesthetic and sophisticated look. First, mixing items of different lengths, textures, and colors can easily elevate your outfit. Layers can also add a sense of height to your body contours. Lastly, layers help you maximize your wardrobe’s use. This is because you can mix the same items in different ways.

How to look stylish in winter layers?

Here are my five layering guidelines to help you look stylish in winter :

Make it Triple For an Extra Chic

How many items should you use to create a stylish layered look? From my experience, creating three visible layers will help you get a sophisticated but not overloaded look. You can add some base layers to these three layers that won’t be visible but will keep you warm and cozy.

Make it Visible

To create a stylish layered outfit, the layers you wear should be visible. There are different ways to achieve it, as you can see some examples in the photos below – Keeping your coat/jacket open; rolling up your sleeves; unbuttoning your shirt; wearing items of various lengths, and more. This way, you’ll create longitudinal outlines in the outfit that will add height to your silhouette. Here are some examples of longitudinal outlines as demonstrated in the photo below – The turtleneck’s texture, the shirt’s buttons, and the open blazer altogether create a longitudinal silhouette.

Add Items in Neutral Colors

You can add neutral-colored items to any outfit without overloading it. You can create a layered outfit in neutral colors or add a touch of color. If you pair two colored items in your layers, the additional items should be in neutral colors to balance the outfit. Alternatively, you can create a monochromatic layered look by mixing items of the same color. In this case, it is best to incorporate items with different textures. This way, you’ll also add interest to your outfit. In the photo below, you can see how you can create a layered outfit mixing three neutral colors – camel, black, and navy blue.

Use Accessories as an Extra Layer

Use accessories on days when you don’t want to add another layer of clothing. A scarf around the neck, a knit wrapped around your shoulders, and even a crossbody bag will serve as an extra layer and give your outfit the desired effect. Layering necklaces can also create an effect of layers in your outfit. For more tips on jewelry layering, read here.

Mix Items in Different Styles & From Different Seasons

Playing with layers can also include items from different seasons and styles. Incorporating items from different seasons is a great way to wear your wardrobe all year. For example, layering an embroidered summer tank top under a winter knit. Layering items in different styles can help you dress your outfit up or down. For example, wearing a denim jacket or shirt under a tailored coat or a blazer will make your outfit look casual yet elegant. You can see some examples in the photos below.
