Winter 2023 Capsule Wardrobe – 33 Items for a Casual Chic Style

Post contains adlinks

I love my winter wardrobe and the way it has evolved in recent years. From a collection of items in different colors, styles, and prints I bought according to what my eyes were drawn to, it became a cohesive wardrobe with clean lines, uniform colors, and versatility for multiple combinations. Now that I have built a solid foundation for my wardrobe, I find it enjoyable to wear the same items season after season. Since the weather has been less cold and rainy this year, I started planning my winter capsule later than usual.

Even though this is the third year I’ve been writing about capsule wardrobes, this is my first official winter capsule blog post. Last year I shared my winter capsule as part of my Do’s and Don’ts tips for starting a capsule wardrobe, and two years ago, I created a mini 10×10 winter capsule. Therefore, I’m excited to share my first blog post on a seasonal winter capsule wardrobe.

Capsule Wardrobe Planning – Finding Inspiration

My winter mood board on Pinterest mixes elegant, tailored silhouettes and casual items. I love mixing textures and layering my outfits in winter. I’ve been mostly drawn to beige, brown, and gray shades. Another color dominating my winter wardrobe this year is navy. It beautifully complements the other colors in my winter capsule.

Winter Capsule New Additions

There are several new additions to my winter capsule. One of them is a vintage brown leather blazer I found on Etsy. After seeing it trending this season, I was inspired to find one secondhand. This allows me to buy a better quality item for the same or a lower price than a new one. For tips on how to shop for a trend secondhand, read here.

Since the size of my trousers has changed, I also needed to replace some of my old jeans. Therefore, I’ve added two pairs of straight-leg jeans in a light and dark wash. Lastly, I’ve added a pair of New Balance trainers to my wardrobe. They are incredibly comfortable, and I enjoy wearing them when it doesn’t rain.

Outerwear & Blazers

I mixed light outerwear pieces with heavier wool coats according to the weather these days. My lightweight pieces include a leather blazer, plaid wool blazer, wool shacket, and trench coat. I’ve also Incorporated camel and navy wool coats for cooler days.

Tops & Button-ups

Button-up shirts are an all-year staple in my wardrobe. In winter, I layer them over a turtleneck knit or under a crewneck knit. The current capsule includes two cotton long-sleeved button-up shirts and a denim button-up.

In addition, my favorite base layers for winter are turtlenecks. I wear them under a knit or a button-up. This capsule includes three turtlenecks I wear as a base layer – black, beige, and stripes. I also chose brown and navy turtlenecks I usually wear without an additional layer.

Knitwear

My winter closet is full of chunky knits with a turtleneck or a crewneck collar. I usually ensure my knits are made of wool or cashmere to keep me warm. In this capsule, I’ve incorporated four basic crew neck knits, a cardigan, and two chunky knits in beige and gray.

Trousers

I often wear in winter a pair of jeans or tailored wool trousers. Therefore, this capsule includes two pairs of full-length light wash and dark wash jeans and a pair of cropped black jeans and flared jeans. I also chose three pairs of wool trousers in different colors and silhouettes and a pair of brown corduroy trousers.

Shoes

The shoes in my capsule include a pair of Converse and a pair of New Balance trainers. I also added a pair of black boots and brown croc Chelsea boots.

I did not include loungewear, sportswear, pajamas, or accessories other than shoes in my capsule.

Outfit Ideas

Since we’re halfway through winter, I’ve already got to wear many of the outfits I created here. Others I will wear in the following weeks. As I always say, this is only a small selection of outfits I can build from the items in the capsule, as there are many more variations to explore.

Like my fall capsule, building a winter capsule felt simple and satisfying. As its foundations stayed the same as last year, I’ve freshened it up with some new items to keep it current and updated to my style and everyday needs.
